For POD, “employment”, “employer”, “employee”, “employability” are serious considerations in talent development and growth towards earning a living (for the employee) and to increase productivity (for the employer). When those are in harmony, there is employment.

Our focus, therefore, is workplace learning and talent development. For it to be reliable talent, the employees must be able to contribute to the achievement of his employer’s business goals. With talent being so varied, its approach towards development cannot be one of “one size fits all”. But the fundamentals are constant – cognitive, psycho-motor and affective. And, unfortunately, society reduces the evidence of talent to a piece of paper – certificate. But that’s all right if all ways and means to that certificate are valid and reliable – curriculum, learning strategy, learning objectives, faculty, assessment, methodology, etc.

Bearing this in mind, POD decided to focus on 3 crucial interrelated business – management centric areas of Human Resource Management, Supervisory-Management and Administration.

Refer to this illustration. All work can be reduced to 2 clusters: SUPERVISORY AND TECHNICAL. The vertical axis represents the Responsibility Level (from Low to High). The horizontal axis represents the percentage of time spent on Technical and Supervisory work. The General Worker at the lowest end of the responsibility level spends most of his time in technical work and a small amount in supervision. The Chief Executive of the Company has to spend a considerable time in supervision and a small amount of his time in technical work.

Management talent is scarce and sparse. Companies must have a ready pool of management talent, on tap, to be on the journey of business excellence and profit and growth.

With the thousands of employees trained by POD, since 1972, an alumni (called POD Alumni) of all who benefit from POD’s training programmes and courses was formed. With that POD Academy (a division of POD) was formed to organise and coordinate certification programmes for the Alumni.

POD Alumni chose to introduce the programmes from Certificate of Proficiency to Diploma to Advanced Executive Diploma.

The Certifiable programmes enable the employee to work effectively and efficiently at the operational level of his career be it in marketing, service, IT, technical, finance, etc. The employee is developed to be Leader.

The Diploma programmes enable the employee one step further. The employee is developed to be Supervisor or Executive. As Executive or Supervisor he/she initiates, decides and acts confidently, with minimum guidance, in adding value to the achievement of Department or Unit goals and plans.

The Advanced Executive Diploma programmes enable the employee to be Manager to head a Unit or Department with Executives as subordinates. The Manager has to be visionary, innovative, creative and have a helicopter view of the Unit or Department to supervise the others and to collaborate with the other Units making up the Company or Organisation he/she serves.
